5 Ways to End the School Year Positively
In just a few weeks schools will start to close for the summer. It is so important to reflect and celebrate with your child. Here are 5 ways to end the school year on a positive note.
First, plan some type of celebration. It can be with friends and family or with your child. Ask your child what he/she would like to do. It could be a special meal. It could be a trip to a special place. It could also be like a birthday party and have an end-of-the-school-year celebration. Many families will have graduation parties for students that are graduating. It can be from college, high school, fifth grade, or kindergarten. It is so important to celebrate the accomplishments your child completed this year. Ask your child what they are most proud of achieving this year. Even young children can express what they are proud of finishing. Have fun planning together and celebrating.
Second, reflect on the past school year. Reflection can be a discussion. It can be a picture that your child drew. It could be a poem or song. Anything that your child can convey in any mode that shows how they felt about this past school year. It can be positive or negative. This is the feelings of the child and what they feel is fine. Either way positive or negative discuss it. Affirm their feelings. Your child could draw a sad picture because one of their friends moved this year. This happened to our oldest son. His close friend moved to another country, and he was very sad. But they now connect through technology. It is important to listen to and support their feelings.
Third, plan activities and trips for the summer. Many children are anxious about the summer. Some children have fears about the unknown. Since summers are much more relaxed. The plans can be in your local areas or have your child help plan your summer vacation. Your child may attend camp or other activities. A huge stressor is making new friends. For many children, it is whether they will be accepted. So, help your child plan to make new friends. Planning helps the child feel more in control of their choices. Getting your child involved in planning improves their nervousness. It also prepares them to make positive choices.
Fourth, find time for your child to do what he/she likes to do. Summers are much more laid back than any other time of the year. Allow your child to do what they like. It could be playing video games, riding bikes, going to playgrounds, or anything else. But provide time for them to enjoy their time off. Remember this is a time to enjoy and for them to be a child. It is important for your child to play. Research has shown that play is important for the development of a child. Playing is also important for any child at any age. Let your child enjoy their summer.
Finally, enjoy being with your child. Do fun things together. It can be as simple as taking a walk. We like to plan a “YES DAY”. “Yes Day” is a book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and was made into a movie in 2021. It is one day that the parents say yes to everything. What is most exciting for children is developing something special for your family. Enjoy being together and making memories.
