Children’s Behaviors

Behaviors are output from a reaction that a child experiences. Society and adults label behaviors as positive or negative. Children will have an input and output of behavior with any experience.
Everything can be a behavior. Eating is an output behavior because the child is hungry. Behavior is a cause and effect. Children have been conditioned to react in certain ways. Some are acceptable and non-acceptable in certain situations. Yet, when a child does not react the way, the teacher wants it is viewed as negative.

There are so many books and articles on behavior especially for classrooms. Still, behaviors in schools are viewed as positive or negative based on the view of the teacher. Still, if behaviors are viewed as an output of an experience, it can focus on that behavior. Some schools still have zero-tolerance policies. Zero-tolerance policies have been shown to be not effective. If behaviors are viewed as the output of an experience only. Then educators trace the events to find the cause and effect.

But many schools do not trace back the behaviors. The educators tell the parents what behaviors the child did but not the cause. So, ask questions. What happened before the behavior? Remember, many children experienced trauma, especially since COVID. So, look for a cause of the output of behavior. Become a detective to figure out the cause and effect of your child’s behavior.

Always ask your child about his/her behavior. Ask what happened in that situation for him/her to react in that certain way. Many times schools do not investigate what happens before the child’s negative behavior. The school only tells the parents about the child’s negative behavior. As a parent, you need to know the cause of the
behavior. Children do not want to have negative behaviors. All children want to be respected and cared for by the adults in their classrooms. So, the child is trying to do their best to behave and do what the teacher wants. All children want to be liked by the teacher.

So when you get a call from the school about your child’s behavior ask questions. Investigate the situation. Ask your child what happened. Report back to the school what you discovered. Document the situation for yourself. Communicate with the school to resolve the situation. If more educators would view behaviors as outputs with a cause and effect. Also, remove the positive and negative ideals of behavior. It would be helpful for children. Behaviors are reactions to what the child perceives and experiences. input Schools have labeled them as positive or negative. For example, in some classrooms, you have to ask permission to go to the bathroom. If you leave without permission that is a negative behavior. But, in other, you can take the pass anytime and go. Which, does not have a negative or positive relationship attached to the experience. It is only going to the bathroom. If we remove the negative connotation it will help the child to better choices.
