Going back to school: Four things to prepare for the New School Year

Going back to school is exciting and fearful. Four things to do to prepare for the new school year.  This summer is going so fast.  After July 4th all the ads turn to back-to-school sales.  Back to school is a big market for sales, especially in office supplies stores.  It is a time the kids are dreading.  Back-to-school produces so much anxiety for almost everyone.

Many schools, especially in the south, are going back in a few short weeks.  Here are four things to do to help your child feel prepared for the new school year.

First, involve your child in deciding what items they want to buy for the new school year.  Many schools have supply lists.  Have your child decide what colors and designs they want.  Have them get excited about new school supplies.  Also have them identify some new clothes, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc. they want for their school year.  Even if they wear uniforms, they can identify weekend clothes for the new school year.  Going together to buy new items can build excitement.

Next, ask your children how they feel about their new school year.  Most children will feel anxiety about starting a new year. They fear they will not have their friends in their classes.  They also may not know their new teachers.  These fears are normal.  Talk with your children that new things are anxious.  Talk to your children about new school year nerves.  Praise your child that they experienced a new school year before so they can be successful again.

Third, teach your child mindful techniques.  Practice deep breathing techniques.  Practicing yoga poses to help reduce stress and nervousness.  Another mindful technique is for the child to journal how they feel and write what they want. Practice yoga.  Yoga connects the child’s mind and body movements.  It can also help with coping skills.

Finally, have the whole family get excited and do activities to celebrate the new school year.  It is very important to celebrate accomplishments and new beginnings. Plan together how to celebrate the summer ending and the beginning of the new school year.  Celebrate all the wonderful things the family did over the summer.  Enjoy the rest of the summer and the beginning of the new school year.
